Job Title: Certified Medical Coder

Location: The Woodlands, TX 77380

Duration: 2+ Months Contract

Job Summary

The Certified Medical Coder is responsible for reviewing clinical documentation and diagnostic results to extract data and apply accurate ICD-10-CM/CPT-4 codes and modifiers for billing, reporting, research, and regulatory compliance. This role ensures coding accuracy according to official coding guidelines and supports high-quality documentation standards. Reports to the Coding Manager.

Education
  • High School Diploma or GED – required

  • Associate Degree in a medical field – preferred

Licenses/Certifications (one required)
  • Certified Coding Specialist (CCS)

  • Certified Professional Coder (CPC)

  • Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT)

  • Certified Medical Coder (CMC)

  • Certified Coding Associate (CCA)

Experience / Knowledge / Skills
  • 2 years of outpatient E/M coding experience required ; outpatient neurosurgery coding preferred.

  • 6 months of HCC coding experience preferred .

  • Ability to code neurology for physicians.

  • EPIC EMR experience preferred.

  • Effective oral and written communication skills.

  • Strong knowledge of ICD-10-CM, CPT, and coding compliance guidelines.

Principal Accountabilities
  • Assign accurate ICD-10-CM diagnoses, CPT codes, and modifiers for outpatient services.

  • Apply technical coding principles and reimbursement expertise to ensure proper billing.

  • Review provider documentation for completeness, accuracy, and compliance.

  • Query providers for clarification and support accurate clinical documentation.

  • Ensure adherence to official coding guidelines, compliance policies, and AHIMA’s Standards of Ethical Coding.

  • Collaborate with providers, leadership, and clinical staff to resolve coding-related issues.

  • Maintain productivity, quality benchmarks, and compliance with organizational standards.

  • Support professional growth through continuing education, mentoring, and serving as a resource for staff.

  • Demonstrate a commitment to providing compassionate, patient-centered service.

  • Perform additional duties as assigned.
