Position : Director of Human Resources
Location : Long Island City, NY (In-office)
Compensation : $125,000
Position Summary The Isamu Noguchi Foundation and Garden Museum seeks an experienced Human Resources professional to join its senior leadership team. This role is responsible for overseeing The Noguchi Museum’s Human Resources function including employee relations, benefits administration, compliance, training/development, compensation, performance management. The Director of Human Resources will serve as a liaison with the union for employee-related matters. The ideal candidate brings knowledge and experience leading Human Resources for a museum or public-facing non-profit.
Duties and Responsibilities Recruiting and Retention : Work with leadership to ensure effective talent acquisition and retention
- Work with Museum leadership to ensure effective talent acquisition and retention
- Develop and implement strategies to attract and retain high-quality candidates
- Design and maintain and programs to enhance skills and improve employee engagement
- Create/revise position descriptions, conduct screening, interviews, assessments and reference checks
Benefits and compensation oversight - Develop and implement HR strategies and initiatives aligned with the overall business strategy
- Provide current and prospective team members with information about compensation and benefits
- Collaborate with third party administrators and payroll/finance teams as needed
Employee Relations and Policy - Provide leadership and guidance on HR-related matters including organizational policies
- Ensure the organization’s compliance with federal, state, and local employment laws and regulations
- Manage progressive discipline, ensuring consistent practice process, investigation and documentation
- Develop, maintains record-keeping for employee data, especially compliance-driven requirements
- Consult with outside counsel to ensure legal compliance of the organization as needed
Employee learning and engagement - Determine training needs, conducts management training sessions, sourcing outside training as needed
- Maintain and updates employee manual and internal operating policies
- Oversee performance appraisal process
Labor Relations - Participate in and support the collective bargaining process, ensuring all relevant partners are prepared
- Maintain requirements calendar and provide required notifications to the union within deadlines
- Oversee administration and compliance with collective bargaining agreement,
- Endeavor to resolve complaints before they rise to formal grievances
Skills & Requirements - SHRM-CP, SHRM-SCP or PHR designation
- Advanced degree in Human Resources Management, Org. Psychology or related field
- At least 8 years leading a Human Resources Function
- Proficiency in payroll systems
- Experience working in the nonprofit industry
- Experience working in Museums is a plus
This is an in-office role located located in The Noguchi Museum in Long Island City, Queens. The hours are 5 days a week, 9 am–5 pm, Monday– Friday. The position requires occasional work outside regular hours.
Compensation and Benefits Salary is $125,000 per year and generous benefits include a six weeks of PTO, medical insurance (including dental and vision, pre-tax commuter benefits, a 403(b) retirement savings plan with employer match.
About the Isamu Noguchi Foundation and Garden Museum Founded in 1985 by Japanese American artist Isamu Noguchi (1904–1988), The Isamu Noguchi Garden Museum (now known as The Noguchi Museum), was the first museum in the United States to be established, designed, and installed by a living artist to show their own work. Located in the vibrant neighborhood of Long Island City, Queens, the Museum itself is widely viewed as among the artist’s greatest achievements.
