Job Description

An in-office position in downtown Manhattan for someone with years of experience selling rights globally to join the International Rights department of a fast-paced, independent literary agency of 25+ employees. The job of International Rights Manager will be assisting in implementing the agency’s global strategy and selling foreign/translation rights for its fast-growing list of clients. The ideal candidate must be able to work in a fast-paced environment and can learn quickly, accommodate and anticipate the needs of a high volume and high performing department, and adapt to the ever-changing and evolving international markets and PFB strategy. A minimum of 3-5 years experience in International Rights is required. 

PROFILE:

  • You have ample experience selling publishing rights internationally, which includes the ability to negotiate deals, create submissions, and handle contracts.
  • You have strong written and verbal communication skills and can communicate effectively with a variety of people. This includes in person and virtual meetings with people of various backgrounds and cultures.
  • You are organized, detail-oriented and able to multi-task while being unafraid of changing goal posts, projects and deadlines and anticipating the needs of the department and agency.
  • You are self-starter who is self-sufficient and a team player who is ready to step in and help their colleagues, with no questions asked, understanding no job is too big or small for you.
  • You demonstrate sound judgment in all things, all while maintaining excellence even under pressure.
  • You have proficiency in AirTable, Microsoft Office Suite, Microsoft Teams, and Zoom. 

RESPONSIBILITES:

STRATEGY CREATION AND IMPLEMENTATION: You will be responsible for forming cohesive submission plans directed at co-agents, scouts and international publishers for a variety of different titles (in all genres) for clients of several high-profile agents. This will include working directly with primary agents to ensure clients’ global strategies are in line with their domestic publications and ensure primary agent/client goals are front of mind. 

NEGOTIATE TOP TIER DEALS: This position will require negotiating international offers and running auctions for clients directly with co-agents and/or publishers. In order to do this you will be able to analyze royalty statements and sales data, compare and contract with other deals and provide clear and concise recommendations based on such data.

ADMINISTRATIVE TASKS: Administrative work will include, but is not limited to, logging submissions, offers and deals into the agency’s databases, contract drafting and reviewing, following up on payments, and client care. It will be your responsibility to trace materials on the global market including covers, publicity requests and international publication dates. You will also be integral into the preparation of materials and planning for international book fairs (rights guides, meeting preparation, post-fair follow-up).  

RELATIONSHIP MAINTAINENCE AND BUILDING. You will be responsible for maintaining relationships externally with co-agents, scouts and publishers, while also understanding the importances of staying abreast of various primary agents’ strategies for their clients. You will need to communicate effectively and provide trusted recommendations, which may include conducting audits, writing reports and performing research.

SALARY: $75,000 + Commission

BENEFITS: Health, vision, and dental insurance provided with premium paid by PFB. 401(k) plan available after 1 full year of employment and discretionary bonus program. 

 
VACATION / PTO: 23 days of paid vacation, 10 holidays + 1 floating holiday. PFB is closed between Christmas and New Year’s.
