Overview
The Water Plant Operator is responsible for operating, monitoring, and maintaining the potable water treatment and distribution system at Ascension Island to ensure safe, continuous, and compliant drinking water for personnel and operations. This includes performing water sampling and testing, adjusting chemical dosages, maintaining equipment, and ensuring compliance with environmental and health standards. This role requires independent judgment, attention to detail, and adherence to safety protocols.
Responsibilities
+ Operate and monitor water treatment plant equipment and systems, including pumps, valves, filters, chemical feeders, tanks, and control panels.
+ Monitor daily system performance, record readings from meters and gauges, and adjust processes to meet water quality standards.
+ Control flow rates, pressure, and chemical feed based on demand and operational requirements.
+ Collect and analyze water samples for chlorine, pH, turbidity, temperature, and other critical parameters.
+ Maintain accurate and detailed records of test results, plant performance, maintenance, and system anomalies.
+ Conducts laboratory tests using testing equipment, such as colorimeter, turbidimeter, pH and TDS meters.
+ The Water Treatment Plant Operator will set/up, dismantle and perform preventive maintenance checks and services for ROWPU systems.
+ Prepare reports in accordance with regulatory and internal reporting requirements.
+ This position description is subject to change at any time as needed to meet the requirements of the program or company.
+ Produces bulk potable and non-potable water using mobile ROWPU and other water production equipment.
+ Produces Class I and Class II water products in accordance with standards in TB MED 576, 577, and other required regulations.
+ Perform routine maintenance and cleaning of tanks, filters, and distribution lines.
+ Identify and troubleshoot issues in mechanical, electrical, and chemical systems and perform minor repairs.
+ Assist maintenance teams with planned upgrades or major repairs when required.
+ Comply with all environmental and safety regulations, including local water quality standards and international health guidelines.
+ Participate in inspections, audits, and emergency response exercises.
+ Maintain cleanliness and safety of the plant and surrounding areas.
+ Monitor water storage levels and usage trends, coordinate with utilities and facilities teams for consumption planning.
+ Assist in training or mentoring junior staff or local personnel as directed.
+ Perform other duties as assigned in support of mission or operational requirements.
Qualifications
+ Education:
+ High school diploma or equivalent required.
+ Additional training or technical coursework in water treatment or environmental science preferred.
+ Experience:
+ Minimum of 2 years' experience operating a water treatment plant or similar utility facility.
+ Experience in remote or austere environments is desirable.
+ Licensing/Certifications:
+ Valid water treatment or distribution operator certification from a recognized authority preferred (local, regional, or international).
+ Basic First Aid and HAZMAT awareness training preferred (or ability to obtain).
+ Language Requirement:
+ Must be fluent in English (spoken and written) to read procedures, complete reports, and interact with the team and supervisors.
+ Additional Duties Statement:
+ The Water Plant Operator may be assigned other related duties by the Utilities Manager or Water Systems Supervisor to ensure the continuous delivery of clean, safe water and compliance with local environmental standards.
