The PACU RN is responsible for the post-operative care and monitoring of patients recovering from anesthesia following surgical or procedural interventions. This role requires high-level clinical judgment, rapid response to critical changes, and a compassionate approach to patient care.
Key Responsibilities:
Monitor patients post-anesthesia to assess vital signs, level of consciousness, pain, and any complications.
Administer medications and treatments in accordance with physician orders and nursing protocols.
Provide post-operative education to patients and families regarding care, discharge instructions, and follow-up.
Collaborate with the surgical team, anesthesiologists, and other healthcare professionals to ensure a safe recovery.
Accurately document patient assessments, interventions, and outcomes in the electronic health record (EHR).
Respond to emergency situations with appropriate interventions such as CPR, medication administration, or advanced airway management.
Maintain a clean and safe environment for patients by adhering to infection control and safety protocols.
Participate in quality improvement initiatives and continuing education to maintain competency in PACU care.
Qualifications:
Education: Associate's or Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing (BSN preferred)
Licensure: Current RN license in Insert State
Certifications:
Basic Life Support (BLS) – Required
Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) – Required
Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) – Preferred or required based on patient population
Experience:
Minimum of 1-2 years nursing experience; PACU, ICU, or ER experience preferred
Experience with airway management, hemodynamic monitoring, and post-operative care a plus
Skills & Abilities:
Excellent assessment and critical thinking skills
Strong communication and interpersonal abilities
Ability to remain calm and act swiftly in high-pressure situations
Proficiency in electronic medical records and charting systems
Team-oriented with a commitment to quality patient care
Working Conditions:
Fast-paced hospital or ambulatory surgical setting
Exposure to patients under anesthesia and potentially critical conditions
May require standing for long periods and occasional lifting of patients or equipment
Rotating shifts, weekends, and on-call coverage as needed
